Our work with schools

BSE4BL have supported young people in our school to understand real examples of racism, challenge their thinking and understand their responsibilities in speaking out and challenging racism.
— Vanessa Whitcombe, Head Teacher at Castle Manor Academy

We believe whole-heartedly that racism in schools is a safeguarding issue and needs to be addressed urgently.

We work with schools to help them:

  • understand the effect that prejudice, stereotyping and bias has on minority students

  • develop better, more enlightened citizens

We offer a wide-range of activities including assemblies, teacher training sessions, forum theatres and affinity groups.

  • how to be an effective ally

Teacher training sessions

We offer training sessions for teachers. Get in touch with us if you’d like to organise a session with your staff.
During these sessions we want to encourage staff to have conversations, and debate the issues.

Forum theatres

Forum theatres are a powerful drama-based technique. We ask minority students to describe incidents that they’ve experienced, and then re-enact them using actors. We then offer suggestions about how the scenarios could play out differently.

Our aim with this technique is to:

  • give white students an insight into the impact that inappropriate and racist behaviour has on minority children

  • explore ways that everyone (including teachers) can ‘call out’ racist behaviour and ensure all incidents are dealt with

Affinity groups

Affinity groups are student-lead sessions where students of colour can connect, share experiences, have a voice, and find solidarity. The content of these sessions is developed by the students themselves. They decide:

  • how they want to communicate their experiences

  • how we can empower them

  • how we can create positive change
